Randy & Jacquie's Story

The Vineyard USA's Spain Partnership, formerly known as the International Association of Missions (IAM), began in 1987 when Phil Strout and Tom Weston took a scouting trip to Spain. Five years later, two separate trips occurred in February 1992: one trip included Vineyard pastors from New England who were asking God to speak to them regarding the possibility of partnering together in Spain, the other trip included Randy & Jacquie Chase who were also praying about moving with their family to plant an English-speaking church for ex-pats in Barcelona. In June of that year, the Chase family moved to Barcelona and a relationship with the partnership pastors began.

In 1993, Randy & Jacquie were encouraged by their sending pastor (Mark Pettersen, from the Vineyard in Palo Alto, CA) to switch from an English-speaking church to Spanish. This was a truly pivotal moment, for up to this time the church they were trying to get off the ground was weak and small. Although the story is longer and more painful than what we can describe here, in the Fall of 1993 La Via Barcelona was born.

Through a series of supernatural events, three wonderful Spanish couples became Randy & Jacquie's team (Jos Miguel Paos & Montse Robledo, Francisco Garca & Bienve Robledo, and Marc Prez & Christine Bonnal Marc & Christine currently pastor one of the Vias in Barcelona.) As well, the move to Spanish-speaking brought the Chase's mission more in-line with what the New England pastors were trying to accomplish, so they joined forces. Prayer increased, as well as financial support, friendship, prayer tours, conferences and workshops. In 1995, the partnership sent two full-time missionaries (Coleen DeVega from Connecticut, and Erika Rojas from Santiago, Chile) who were greatly used to build and establish the church.

The Barcelona church continued to grow and had a hand in planting a few other Vineyards around the country (San Sebastin, Valencia, Castelldefels, Cuitat Vella a poor barrio of Barcelona most of which remain small. (The Cuitat Vella church closed in 2008.)

The Chase family moved back to the States in 2001, pastoring the Vineyard in Framingham, MA, a bedroom community of Boston. Phil Strout asked Randy to direct the partnership in 2002. Randy & Jacquie moved back to CA in April 2008 and currently live in Mountain View, CA, where they are serving as the interim lead pastors of the Palo Alto Vineyard - the same church that sent them to Spain back in 1992 and continue to direct the Spain Partnership.
